The sad story of Janelle Bird

The other day I was perusing websites that compiled news accounts of female teacher with male student sex. Yeah, I was doing it for my amusement. It's titillating stuff and a guilty pleasure. It's hard to feel sympathetic for older female teachers who act unethically, and it's hard to feel bad for teenage boys who get some.

However, the story of 25-year-old teacher Janelle Bird struck a chord, and she's been on my mind.

I do feel bad for her. The stories I've read sound like the male 15-year-old student was the pursuer-seducer and she was the innocent. From what I've read, Janelle was a well-regarded teacher who was sincere in her desire to make the world better through her profession. The devil came in a disarming package and a sweet young woman surrendered to temptation. Yes, she was naive and, yes, she was in a position where she should have been savvier, but it's a lesser world when her kind of naivete is considered bad or wrong.

Yes, I believe there is good and evil in the world. There is innocence and corruption. It's a constant struggle to stay on the right side. Janelle lost that struggle and now she's paying for it.

'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone' Jesus said. And yet what has she done? A compassionate woman chose to give up her virginity and engage in consensual loving sex with a sexually responsive younger male. Imo this woman has not even sinned! Why do we stone her? The punishment is the crime. The society which condemns is guilty.

But the woman in South Florida doesn't get prison time. It makes no sense.
